Other activities include horseriding fishing and golf which are all nearby. Family theme parks such as The Milky Way and The Big sheep are always popular. Leisure facilities: play equipment. Barnstaple is the main town in North Devon, situated on the River Taw. This town with ancient historic roots, as well as strong Victorian roots to much of its architecture, boasts a fine range of shops and good transport connections with both rail access from Exeter as well as a newly opened Western Bypass which now diverts much of the traffic which once used to work its way through the town centre. Notable points of interest include the Castle, the Pannier Market and the Clock Tower dating back to 1862. An annual attraction is the Barnstaple Fair held every September and of much interest to railway enthusiasts will be the nearby narrow gauge Lynton and Barnstaple Railway which has been re-opened in recent years as a tourist attraction running authentic narrow gauge steam trains.
